Hugging Figures, 2022

Included in ‘Homies’, a group exhibition at China Heights Gallery, Surry Hills curated by Sam Stephenson and Mackenzie Rowe.

“I made this without thinking / they happened naturally / it was like playing. But in that, it held “you + me”, it held us all together, it held the smiling and the laughing and the crying that we all do as one, it held me reaching out to you to be held as we hurtle through all this shit. And it’s simple because it’s a hug, but it’s also everything at the same time right now. And it’s me hugging my family across oceans because I miss them and it’s been too long, and it’s me hugging my mama as her body starts to fail her and it’s me hugging my papa because he doesn’t live here and it’s me hugging my friends who are far away and distant and it’s me hugging me because sometimes this all hurts.

I made 40 hugging figures to create a small army of hope, not that I honestly have much for the future but I have some for right now and today counts for tomorrow and on it goes. Just something we all need right now. Hold each other close always.” - Marianna Ebersoll, 2022
